Making public purchases of around 200 pieces of private archival collections

The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea conducted a nation wide public contest for archival resources related with elections, political parties, and the history of the election commission, and secured about 200 pieces of objects including election posters, books, goods, and advertising materials for candidates.

It was the first time that the election posters of the 4th and 5th Presidential and Vice Presidential elections were found in the flesh besides their photos. In particular, the manual of election administration management is the valuable materials that we can find out the election management process from before the foundation of the National Election Commission on January 21, 1963.

The contest conducted this year for the very first time aims at discovering highly sophisticated archival objects related with elections, parties, and the history of the election commission; also it is for securing rare materials of great historical value, so that the establishment of public service structure of relevant archives for public and the foundation of National Election Archive Center can be prepared.

These resources were verified for objectivity and expertise by internal and external review committees. While they will be in use for various special exhibitions and resource cooperation with other relevant organizations, the NEC plans to open them to public through the Cyber Election History Museum site(http://museum.nec.go.kr) of the NEC after establishment of data base including filming and filing out basic information.

The NEC said that it will continue to do its best to collect and preserve the valuable archives for elections, and the history of political parties and the election commissions apart from its election management duties  in order to pass them on to future generation.
