Election Districts and Representation System

  • Presidential Election

For presidential elections, a simple plurality systemis used, with the candidate who receives the votes across a single nationwide single constiuency being elected. If there is only one candidate running for the office, an election is still held and the candidate is required to receive a vote from more than one third of the total number of voters in order to be elected to office.

  • National Assembly Elections
    • Constituency Members

253 members are elected in single-member constituencies by a simple plurality. Voters elect one candidate in their constituency, and the candidate with the most votes gets elected.

    • Proportional Representation Members

47 members are elected in a closed-list proportional representation system, where seats are allocated to parties in proportion to their overall nationwide share of the votes on the proportional ballot. To qualify for seat allocation, parties need to either win at least five constituency seats or win more than 3 percent of the total valid proportional representation ballots.
