The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea announced that shipboard voting for the 21st National Assembly elections will be held from April 7 to 10. Voting will be held for 2,821 sailors aboard 394 ships with a Korean citizen as captain such as deep-sea fishing vessels, and the period will be set by the captain.

Shipboard voting is held during presidential elections and National Assembly elections following the expiration of the term of office. During the 20th National Assembly elections, 2,611 out of 2,849 registered shipboard voters cast their ballot, recording a 91.6 percent turnout.

Shipboard ballot papers were sent by fax to each ship by April 6. Shipboard voters should then vote at the polling station installed on their ship in attendance of observers and the ballot papers should be sent directly to the relevant Si/Do election commission that has jurisdiction over the address the voter is registered to.

To ensure the secrecy of the ballot, the Si/Do election commissions receive the ballots by shield fax, which are received with the mark on the ballot already sealed, and they then send the ballot to the relevant Gu/Si/Gun election commission that has jurisdiction over the address the voter is registered to, and they are then counted on election day.

The NEC urged shipboard voters who arrive back in Korea before the start of the shipboard voting period to vote at their registered polling station on April 15, the date of the election, and cast their valuable ballot. To do so they should report to the their relevant Gu/Si/Gun election commission and attach documents that show their boarding record such as a Seafarers Passport or a Crew Log (in the case the ballot paper has already been sent, it should returned together with the document).
