- A full-scale overseas voting management to be launched from September 10 The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea announced that the overseas voting commissions for the 20th Presidential election will be set up in 178 diplomatic missions throughout the world from September 10, and it will go into a full-scale overseas voting management including the operation of the overseas voting situation room at the NEC.
The overseas voting commissions will be operated until April 8 in 2022, and carry out the activities such as running of the overseas polling stations, voting management, prevention of the election-related crimes and enforcement, and overview of the administrative work of election management, and so forth.
The overseas voting commissions consist of commissioners (up to two) appointed by the NEC, commissioners recommended by each political party which has a negotiating group in the National Assembly, and one recommended by the head of the mission from among their staff.
There are in total four diplomatic missions in which the overseas voting commissions will not be set up for these reasons as follows: 1. Unstable situations of the hosting countries due to wars or revolts - Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Libya - Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Yemen 2. Due to lack of managerial infrastructure of overseas voting from the recent setup - Brisbane branch office from Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Sydney As the NEC said that it will do its utmost for higher voter turnout and fair management for the 20th Presidential election as well, applying the five well-managed overseas voting experiences accumulated in the past which started from the 19th National Assembly Elections, it also asked for positive interest and participation of the overseas Koreans.
