The National Election Commission held an ‘Election Advisory Committee meeting’ on April 15 for the successful management of the 6th Nationwide Local Elections. The Election Advisory Committee provides advice and suggestions as requested by the Chairperson of NEC in relation to the advancement of electoral system and the fair management of every kind of election and voting and consists of 26 professionals from the press, academia, legal circles, the public relations sector, civic groups, etc. The committee meeting was presided over by the Chairperson Lee In-Bok and included a presentation by the Chief Planning Management Officer Kim Dai-Nyeon on ‘plans for each area of the management of the 6th Nationwide Local Elections’ and a discussion among the committee members on pending issues with election management. The discussion on pending issues dealt with the following 5 topics: l How to achieve voter-oriented election management; l How to efficiently promote early voting and how to ensure the stable management of early voting; l How to share responsibility among the Election Commission, the press, civic groups and associations to settle K-Manifesto and how to ensure the relevant role is fulfilled; l How to effectively promote local elections to increase voter turnout; and l How to achieve law-abiding elections by taking stern measures against major election offences, etc. Meanwhile, the NEC showed its expectation that the Election Advisory Committee meeting would serve as a starting point for the successful management of the upcoming local elections. The NEC also stated valuable suggestions from the meeting would be reviewed and reflected in election management and system improvement. |
