On May 19, the National Election Commission provided the election subsidy of KRW 38.91 billion to 4 political parties, the female candidate nomination subsidy of KRW 2.06 billion to 3 political parties and the disabled candidate nomination subsidy of KRW 520 million to 2 political parties among those participating in the 6th local elections. The election subsidy is provided to the political parties nominating a candidate for an election held at the end of the term of office and the corresponding amount is calculated by multiplying the total number of those who voted in the most recent National Assembly elections and an appropriate unit for subsidy (KRW 968 in the case of the 6th local elections). Half of the election subsidy is allocated to the political parties holding a negotiation group in the National Assembly among those that have nominated a candidate. Meanwhile, the political parties having more than 5 but less than 20 seats in the National Assembly are allocated 5% of the total subsidy and those having less than 5 seats or none that meet certain requirements are allocated 2% of it respectively. The other half of the subsidy is allocated according the ratio of the seats each party has in the National Assembly and the rest of it given out based on the proportion of the votes gained by each party in the 19th National Assembly elections. Accordingly, the Saenuri party was given KRW 17.68 billion, the New Politics Alliance for Democracy KRW 16.35 billion, the United Progressive party KRW 2.8 billion and the Justice party KRW 2.08 billion, the total of which came up to KRW 38.9 billion. The female candidate nomination subsidy is allocated to the political parties that have nominated a female candidate for elections of district Si/Do assembly members and district Gu/Si/Gun assembly members. The total amount of the female candidate nomination subsidy is the total number of those who voted in the 19th National Assembly elections multiplied by KRW 100. The Saenuri party was given KRW 850 million, the New Politics Alliance for Democracy KRW 710 million, and the United Progressive party 480 million. The disabled candidate nomination subsidy is allocated to the political parties that have nominated a disabled candidate for elections of district Si/Do assembly members and district Gu/Si/Gun assembly members. The total amount of the subsidy is the total number of those who voted in the 19th National Assembly elections multiplied by KRW 20. 2 political parties received the disabled candidate nomination subsidy for the 6th local elections. The Saenuri party received KRW 65 million while the New Politics Alliance for Democracy was given KRW 450 million. The female candidate nomination subsidy shall be used as election expenses for female candidates and the disabled candidate nomination subsidy for disabled candidates. Meanwhile, earlier on May 15, the NEC had provided KRW 4.42 billion to the Saenuri party, KRW 4.08 billion to the New Politics Alliance for Democracy, KRW 700 million to the United Progressive party and KRW 500 million to the Justice party as the general yearly subsidy for the second quarter of 2014 with the total amount reaching KRW 9.72 billion. |
