• 168 people from 28 organizations in 23 countries to observe an on-site early voting polling station and a counting station for the presidential election The National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea announced that it will hold the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) for the 20th presidential election on March 9 from 7:30pm.
IEOP is an event where election officials are invited from abroad to introduce and promote outstanding election management system and methods of the Republic of Korea. It is usually conducted in a way that foreign election officials observe on-site election fields including campaigning, and voting and counting processes. Unfortunately, due to the spread of COVID-19 this year, online observation will take place instead.
As 168 election related staff from 28 organizations in 23 countries watch the early voting polling station and the on-site counting station, they will be able to observe Korea’s advanced election management methods and disinfection management of the COVID-19 countermeasures.
Noh Jeong-hee, chairperson of the NEC said that this observation will not only be a forum for understanding the election system of the Republic of Korea, but also the beneficial time for sharing knowledge and experience on the development of democracy.
The online international election observation programme for the 20th presidential election will last for two hours from 7:30pm through Zoom platform, and will be broadcast through the NEC’s YouTube channel at the same time.
